Bone Drugs - How to Build a Drug Empire

So...you want to run an international drug empire? In that case you're going to have to play the system like a virtuoso.

For a master class in system manipulation, you couldn't do much better than the big brains at Merck. Here's how they turned a completely made up bone-health condition into a license to print money.

In four easy steps...

-----------------------------------------------------------
Friends in high places
-----------------------------------------------------------

STEP ONE: Change the system to fit the drug.

In 1995, the FDA approved Fosamax--Merck's osteoporosis drug. But this "breakthrough" drug wasn't a blockbuster at first because there was a little diagnostic problem.

At the time, the only method to measure bone density in the spine and hips (the critical osteoporosis points) required cumbersome and expensive equipment. This made screening costly, so women weren't getting screened in large numbers.

Another technique used "peripheral machines" to measure bone density in a finger or a wrist. These machines were smaller and less expensive. But measurements of peripheral bones don't reveal what's going on in the spine and hips.

That critical detail didn't bother Merck officials. They launched a campaign to widely promote the use of peripheral machines in doctors' offices. This gave a boost to the number of people screened, a huge boost to the number of diagnosed osteoporosis cases, and an equally huge boost to Fosamax sales.

STEP TWO: Get some help from friends in Congress.

Want to REALLY improve your business? Throw a ton of money at Congress.

Intensive lobbying efforts by Merck paid off in 1997 with the Bone Mass Measurement Act. Under this act, bone scans were covered by Medicare. So Merck got another triple boost: more screenings, more osteoporosis cases, more Fosamax sales.

STEP THREE: Get some help from friends at the FDA.

1997 was a big year for Merck. In addition to purchasing the Medicare boost from Congress, they developed a low-dose Fosamax pill and got the FDA to approve this "new" pill as a treatment for a condition that requires no treatment at all.

They call the condition osteopenia--a word dreamed up by World Health Organization researchers to define diminished bone density.

But here's the catch: Just about everyone experiences bone density loss as a natural part of aging. So you may have perfectly healthy bones, but just not quite as dense at 45 as they were at 35. That's osteopenia.

Of course, the medical community knows that osteopenia isn't a serious health concern. But doctors played right along with Merck and the FDA. So now, Fosamax and other osteoporosis drugs are regularly prescribed for osteopenia.

STEP FOUR: Get more help from those FDA buddies.

Last year, FDA officials announced that they could find no evidence that bisphosphonate drugs, such as Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast, etc., increase risk of femur fractures just below the hip joint.

But that same month, two studies showed that long-term use of this class of drugs absolutely does appear to increase fracture risk.

Is this a disaster in the making for Merck? Not quite. After a brilliant marketing run of well over a decade, Merck's luck held out beyond the date when the patent for Fosamax expired in 2008.

Merck wins. Patients lose.

Except those, like us, who realize that marketing campaigns aren't medicine.

Tell your friends to just say no to drug therapy for osteopenia or osteoporosis.

BioMeridian Testing now available!

What is BioMeridian?
How do you effectively and accurately determine your overall state of health? Many tools such as PET and CAT scans can provide valuable information regarding specific areas of the body, but now the BioMeridian machine has the ability to assess the energy meridians (channels) of your body using non-invasive methods to determine the functionality of your organ systems, nervous system, glands and tissues. An example most people are familiar with is an EKG or EEG, which is used to test the electrical impulses of your heart. The BioMeridian technology does the same thing, but for your entire body!

History and Technology

The system is based on a 5,000 year old system of Chinese medicine and acupuncture. The technology found in the BioMeridian combines the life work of two phenomenal doctors. Dr. Reckeweg spent his life documenting the 6 phases of 600 different conditions and their progression. The other, Dr. Reinhold Voll documented the acupressure points, that when measured, accurately show the functions of the tissues and organs associated with that point. With several advances in computers and measuring devices, inventors at BioMeridian have produced a truly phenomenal way of helping patients not only know where they stand, but provide natural remedies that encourage a balance for any patient.

Dr. Vaughn, herbalist and naturopath
Now, in under an hour, a patient may be tested using a small current (not a shock, you will not feel anything) on Voll's 60 acupressure points that measure the resistance of the tissues and combine them with Reckweg's phases of progression of conditions. This gives the patient an easy to read graph showing where they stand in their overall health. It then allows the provider to use the software to match up the best nutritional choices available from whole food supplements or herbs.

Results of the changes may be monitored as often as weekly in severely ill patients or less often for those that just want to monitor changes to their health. The practitioner gets a report card on both himself and the patient. If the patient has been compliant with the instructions, the results will be beneficial. Non-compliance on the part of the patient will show as well. In addition, the practitioner can monitor the result of his recommendations and adjust to optimize results. It is enlightening for the patient to be able to see his/her progress on paper.

What Might the BioMeridian System Discover?
Biomeridian testing is a noninvasive method used to assess the energy meridians (channels) of the body, and it can tell you:

• The functional status of your meridians and their related organs, systems, or functions, by determining if they are stressed, balanced, or weakened, and by how much.
• Which specific nutritional products will bring your system back into balance.
• If you have specific sensitivities to foods, molds, pollens, chemicals, metals, etc.
• If you have infections which may have been caused by bacteria or other known pathogen
• If you have problems relating to dental work. You can discover infections, heavy metals and other chemicals in your mouth that may affect the rest of your body.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING AN EXAMINATION?

The examination is performed by testing approximately 60 different points on both hands and feet which relate back to the energy channels and their related organs, systems, or functions. This testing does not involve needles, only a stylus is used to send a very small electrical current (not a shock) through each point, which is recorded and analyzed by the computer system. Be prepared to sit for up to an hour during this detailed examination, so wear comfortable clothing and relax. It is advised that you wash your hands and feet prior to the exam, and remove all jewelry on both the hands and feet.

We request that you do not ask questions of the examiner during the test due to the time consuming nature of the test itself. There will be time to ask questions when you are given the results and recommendations after the exam.

WHAT IS THE COST, AND WILL INSURANCE COVER ANY OF IT?

The cost for the initial exam and report is included in our new patient visit fee of $100 and will be take one hour and thirty minutes. Any follow-up testing which includes the same full work-up and report is $60. This does not include any nutritional products you may need to purchase. All payment is expected at the time of service. Insurance will not cover this expense. (This test does not provide a medical diagnosis. If you suspect you may need medical intervention, you should consult your physician, who can provide a medical diagnosis and prescribe an appropriate treatment regimen.)

HOW MANY TIMES WILL I HAVE TO BE RE-TESTED?

It is recommended that you return every 1-2 months, depending on your needs, until balance has been fully restored to all of your energy meridians. How long this will take depends on how far out of balance you are at the time of the initial exam, your compliance with the nutritional regimen recommended for you, and what your personal functional health goals are.
